The bean bag is the most critical tool in the bean bag toss game. Players cannot play their game successfully if it is made with poor quality, incorrect weight, and inappropriate materials. Not only that, it affects the players’ mindset and morale. 

That’s why ACA introduced some rules and regulations relevant to bean bags. According to them, the standard size of the bean bag should be 6 x 6-inch diameter. 

What is the correct weight for the bean bag used for the bean bag toss game? The ACA standard filler weight is 16 oz or 450 g. The bean bag fabric should have a 10 oz weight. So, the final weight of the bean bag will be 26 oz. On the other hand, duck canvas materials are used to make these bean bags. 

However, selecting the ideal filler type that gives the correct weight and volume is challenging. Sometimes, you may think of suitable filler types. But already doubt that fillers can give sufficient weight?

Essential Properties of the Bean Bag Fillers

Density

What should come into your mind first when you see this word? It is weight and volume. Yes, these are two major parameters directly related to density. 

The standard filler weight should be 400 g – 450 g. Also, you cannot fill large volumes in a 6 x 6-inch bag. So, here, you should select the ideal filler type with relevant weight and volume. The density plays a significant role here. So. Check and get an idea from the below example.

You have 1 kg of cotton and 1 kg of steel. So, do you think both of these materials have the same volume? Definitely No! The cotton acquires a large volume, compatible with the steel.

If I explain this further with the density, the cotton has low density, and steel has high-density values. Due to that, if we take the same weight, low-density materials take up massive space than a high-density material.  

This theory is vital when filling beans into the tossed bean bag. Think, you select a low-density cotton-like thing to fill a 6 x 6 inches bean bag. Then it only can carry 1 Kg of cotton. But if you choose comparatively high-density filler like rice, it will give more weight than corn.

As I mentioned above, people used natural filler types such as corn, rice, and dried beans to fill their bean bags. However, these are very susceptible to moisture and pest.

So, mold and bacteria can quickly deteriorate these filler types. That’s why people reject these natural fillers and move for alternatives. Because it is challenging to keep and store their bean bags for an extended period, on the other hand, organizers have to prepare them for every tournament or buy them from a market. 

But it is also time-consuming extra work. As a result, modern people tend to use plastic pellets and resin pellets for their bean bags. 

Now you may have good knowledge about bean bag filler properties. So, let’s check the factors of the bean bag fillers in detail.

Fillers For Bean Bag Toss Bags

Corn Kernels

Corn kernels have been the favorite filler type since the beginning of this game. Due to its low cost, availability, and perfect weight and texture, most people use it.

On the other hand, bean bag toss is a traditional game. So, Americans use this crop as to sign of prosperity and wealth. 

Moreover, the density and texture of the corn kernels ideally match for bean bag toss. The 6 x 6-inch bean bag can store 400-450 g of corns. Moreover, it can give a super flexible texture to the bean bag. So, the player can quickly grab and toss them into the targets.

Further, this bean bag is free from toxic compounds. So, any person can use this without any health issues. Rather than these common facts, there are some other scientific facts about corn kernels.

Yes, plastic pellets are dense and hard. So, it gives enough weight to toss a bean bag. Generally, 14-16 ounce (350 g- 450 g) plastic pellets are enough to fill. Moreover, if it hits the cornhole board, it will bounce more instead of sliding.

Resin Pellets

On the other hand, these bean bags are difficult to store for a long time. So, keep it in mind.

Craft Beads

This is a safe and straightforward filler type that can use to fill bean bags. This alternative is super convenient for people who use craft beads at home. Here, these beads are available in different sizes.

So, you should select the beads that are the same size as corn kernels. Also, make sure these beads are not smaller than a grain of rice and more significant than a dime. Why?

This fine dust helps slide the bag on the board and play better. This corn dust offers an authentic experience to all players, and they enjoy it.

Slide Test

Here you can take two types of bean bags to check the cornhole board. 

• 16-46′ size, brand new 100% duck bean bags or
• 18-48′ size, gently used 100% duck cloth bean bags

Besides the bean bags, take one measuring tape and a cornhole board.

How Does The Slippery Test Work?

Step 1: Setup Cornhole Board.

The backside of the board should have 12 inches gap, and the front side should have 3.5 inches with the ground.

Step 2: Put your bean bag on the top left corner of the cornhole board.

It would be best to pat and flat the bean bag. Then place the duck cloth side on the top left corner without overhang. 

Step 3: Set the measuring tape at the back of the board.

You should open the tape from the ground to 40 inches in height.

Step 4: Slowly and gently lift the backside of the cornhole board.

At the initial level, your board fixes at 12 inches in height. Here, you should gradually raise it from that 12 inches level. 

Step 5: Check the tape measure; that bean bag starts to move.

Check these measures in the below table. Then you can get a clear idea that your bean bag board is slick level.

Tips to Make Bean Bag Boards Slippery

Tip #1 Use Fine Sandpaper

The roughness is a significant issue that causes to make cornhole boards less slippery. So, to eliminate that, you can use some tips. 

The 320 grit or higher grit sandpaper is the easiest way to polish your cornhole board. Not only that, it is the cheapest way to do this task. 

You have to smooth the bean bag board manually or mechanically using fine sandpaper. Do sanding over decals. Then clean the wood dust. Make sure your board is free from any foreign material, and apply the final coat of poly. After that, let them dry for 72 hours. 

Now, your board is ready to play! 

Tip #2 Use Polyurethane

Polyurethane is the most common product used to finish cornhole boards. This comes with two different product types such as oil-based and water-based. 

If you choose water-based paint, it will dry quickly. And also, it will leave a clear coat on a bean bag board’s surface.

The oil-based coats are more durable than water-based ones. Also, oil-based coats need more time to dry, and they will give amber yellow color to the cornhole board. Moreover, the oil-based Polyurethane is best for the decal and stained boards.

To get ideal results, apply 3,4 coats on the cornhole board. Wait sometime between each coat and let them fully dry. After that, you can use the next paint coat. 

After applying all coasts, finish the board using 320 grit sandpaper. This is a bit of a time-consuming process. However, you can get great results by applying this method. 

Water-based products are also a good alternative. It is easy to use and will not change your cornhole board look. Also, after applying this paint to the cornhole, you can use it without any modifications for a long time. 

Tip #3 Use Polyacrylic

You can use polyacrylic or poly to coat the cornhole board. Due to its fast-drying and water-based property, it can protect the board’s surface. On the other hand, polyacrylic is cheaper than Polyurethane. 

Other than the above benefits, you will offer a pack of some other benefits by using polyacrylic. So, if you need a glossier and shining look cornhole board, choose this. 

This polyacrylic is ideal for light wood boards such as maple and birch. When you are applying poly, you may see some bubbles there. But, you do not need to worry about them too much. They will disappear when drying. 

Also, the polyacrylic coat looks thin and runny. But you do not need to think about it too because it can give enough slippery level to your cornhole board. 

Further, keep in mind that polyacrylic is far smelly and toxic. So, use them carefully. 

Tip #4 Kernal Corn Powder

Do you know you can enhance the slippery level of the board without doing anything?

Confuse? Read and know-how!

Most bean bags are filled with kernel corns. Over time, these natural seeds break down and create corn powder. When you toss the bean bags and play the game, this powder automatically releases onto the bean bag board. 

So, it will allow sliding bean bags easier. On the other hand, these tiny particles reduce the friction level of the cornhole board. You feel a bit slippery after they spread on the cornhole board.

However, do not let this powder inhale. It will badly affect your health.

Tip #5 Add Olive Oil

Now you know the several methods to enhance the slipperiness of your cornhole board. Do you believe olive oil also can improve the slipperiness of the board? 

Yes, it is true! Olive oil is an excellent solution for the varnish plywood cornhole board. On the other hand, olive oil is an environmentally friendly solution.

Generally, the cornhole or bean bag toss game is governed by American Cornhole Organization (ACO). This organization has continued its duty since 2003 to develop bean bag toss games worldwide. They set rules and regulations for the future upliftment of the cornhole game. 

So, under the rules and regulations of the bean bag toss game, American Cornhole Organization (ACO) mentioned that “the players should pitch the bean bag with an underhand release.” 

So, it is derived that overhand tossing is invalid or foul. So, if you throw the bean bag in a tournament with the overhand release, it may cause you to lose your point or cancel the scoring.

As a result, almost all the cornhole or bean bag toss tournaments that are internationally accepted have to accept this rule. Some specific cornhole or bean bag toss tournaments mention their own rules and regulations regarding the Cornhole or bean bag toss. 

Hence, sometimes they will accept overhanded tossing in Cornhole or bean bag toss. However, you can try overhanded toss when you play with your family and friends. 

How Do You Throw Overhand in Bean Bag Toss?

As you know, overhand tossing is not usually done. But if you play Cornhole with your friends and relations, you can try this overhand tossing style. 

What you have to do is you can settle it with your opponent. But you should do this before starting the round. Here you rearrange the rules and regulations of Cornhole with the consent of other players. 

However, if multiple games are played in the same yard or place, you should ensure no disturbance through overhand tossing. Because when you throw bean bags overhand, they may reach other courts. 

It should be left at least 10 feet between bean bag toss courts. 

Overhand Tossing Vs Underhand Tossing

Overhand Tossing

As you know, overhand tossing is not usually used in bean bag tossing games. But I think to clarify the difference between underhand throwing and overhand throwing. First, we check how to toss bean bags with the underhand technique. 

Step 1: First, stand straight upright, facing your target or hole. Then hold the bean bag in your dominant hand. 

Step 2: Then turn 900 to your dominant hand’s side. For instance, if you hold the bean bag in your right hand, turn 900 to the right.

But if you are going to throw with your left hand, turn sideways 900 to the left. Similarly, you have to reposition your legs. So, you are now standing sideways to the hole or target. 

Step 3: Position your legs to shoulder-width apart

Step 4: Lift the non-throwing hand and shift the weight into the back foot

Step 5: Lift your dominant hand or throwing hand up to your ear. Now the ball is close to your ear.

For example, if you use the right hand, the ball is near the right ear. Or else, if you use the left hand, the ball is close to the left ear. 

Step 6: Now you are ready to toss or throw. 

Step 7: In one motion, shift your weight to the front leg. Then drop the pointing arm and rotate the torso as you bring the throwing hand over your shoulder to release the bean bag into the hole or target. 

Underhand Tossing

Underhand tossing is the usual or legal throwing in bean bag tossing because it is accepted by American Cornhole Organization (ACO). 

So, in almost all the bean bag tossing tournaments, underhand throwing is practiced. So, let’s see how you throw bean bags underhand. 

Step 1: Here, you can begin the pitching of the Cornhole with underhand tossing by facing your target or hole while holding the bean bag in your dominant hand. 

Step 2: Then shift the bodyweight center over the leg. For instance, if your dominant hand is the right one, you will put the weight on your right leg. 

Step 3: After swinging your arm that holds the bean bag back behind you

After that, stride 12 inches forward with another foot. Now you are in a staggered stance. Similarly, do not forget to remain on your shoulder, focusing on your target or hole. 

Step 4: Then swing your arm forward. Simultaneously, transfer your weight onto your lead leg and move the free hand back slightly. 

Because this will help you keep the balance of the body, once your dominant hand is positioned between the shoulder and waist, it is time to release the bean bag to reach its target.

Get aim for the top of the cornhole board. The board’s top edge is positioned at a 12-inch height from the ground. Due to this angle, when your bean bag hits the board, it will be slippery down into the hole.

Here, do not throw the bean bag speedily. It will cause bounce bean bag out of the board. So, gentle speed and underarm throw are the best.

How Are Rules Created For Bean Bag Toss Game?

The Bean bag toss game is a funny and straightforward game that many people love. If we consider the history of this game, it goes beyond 2003.

There were no official rules for the bean bag toss game during this period. At that time, people play this game anywhere that has enough space. The backyard is a famous spot where a family practices this beautiful game.

But in 2003, Mike Whitton and his sons went for a family gathering. They saw some people playing this fantastic game in that location. However, they realize there are no consistent rules for this game when carefully watched.

As a result, Mike decides to form an association for this game. The American Cornhole Association (ACA), Ohio, is his first step. After several years, his effort succeeded, and 25,000 members across the USA got membership in ACA in 2008.

From that day to the present, ACA works as the official governing body of the bean bag toss games. Also, they set rules and offered a national ranking system.

Now you all know about the lovely story, which helps to prepare these rules. So, let’s check what they prepared.

Rules Of Bean Bag Toss Game

Rule 1: Court Layout

Ground

You may need a ground or proper court to play a bean bag toss game.

According to the ACA, a bean bag toss court or cornhole court should have a rectangular area. It should have 10 feet wide and a minimum of 45 long.

Foul Lines

The foul line should draw 27 feet apart from each other. These lines should be parallel to the front of the bean bag toss board.

 However, there are two types of imaginary foul lines. These are;

1. Open adult play
2. Junior play

The open adult foul line is a 30 feet long imaginary line on the opposite board starting from the hole’s beginning. The junior play foul line is an that is 21 long. It is also an imaginary line.

Board Direction

It is better to choose the north-south setting for outdoor courts.

The north-south direction can minimize the effect of sunlight. If not, players must feel uncomfortable when sunray directs into their faces and eyes.

Toss Board

The Toss board should place 27 feet apart and touch the foul line.

Pitches Boxes

The pitches boxes are rectangular spaces. Each player should remain in this pitcher’s box while tossing the bean bag. Generally, there are four pitches boxes drawn to play.

The dimensions of these boxes should be 4 feet x 3 feet. Each pitcher’s box should draw parallel on both sides of the bean bag toss board.

Multiple Courts

If you wish to organize a tournament, you definitely need several courts to play a bean bag toss game.

However, the adjacent court should have at least 10 feet to eliminate the disturbances and ensure safety. But if it is possible, mark them 12 feet apart if you have enough space. It is ideal.

Indoor or Covered Courts

The indoor and covered courts regulations are exactly the same as the abovementioned rules.

Rule 2: Tools And Equipment

The American Cornhole Association enforced some rules and standards for the tools and equipment.

Board

• Each bean bag toss board should be a 48-inch x 24-inch rectangular shape and made with plywood. The thickness of the board should be at least ½ inch.
• The cornhole board should have solid wood sides.
• Also, it should have a very smooth texture and shall not be any blemishes on this wooden surface.

When players toss the bean bags into the board, these blemishes can disrupt their aim.

However, nowadays, people use plastic boards to play bean bag toss games. But there is a considerable difference between wooden and plastic boards.

Cornhole

The Cornhole should have 6 inches in diameter. Also, it should be placed 9 inches from the top edge and 12 inches on each side of the board edges.

Angle

Front of the board: The height should be 4 inches from the ground.  

Back of the board: The back of the board should be 12 inches from the ground. Board’s highest point should place at 90 degrees angle.

Bean Bag / Cornhole Bag

• The double stitch 6 x 6 inches bags are taken to play bean bag toss. The duck canvas is mainly used to prepare these bags.
• The weight of these bags should be between 14 and 16 ounces.
• Feed corn was the main filler used to fill these bean bags in the past days. However, due to lack of availability and easiness, ACA allows using of plastic pellets for bean bags.

Rule 3: Pitching

Adults Players

The adult players should pass the bean bag while sitting in the pitcher’s box, behind the 30 feet of the opposite foul line.

Junior Players

Junior players have a chance to reduce the pitching distance. So, they can pitch from any place while behind the 21-foot foul line.

Rule 4: Court Preparation And Maintenance

Court Maintenance

Before playing the bean bag toss or cornhole game, the court should be free from any foreign material distracting the game.

So, before playing the bean bag toss, you must ensure the ground is clear from disrupting material.

The player shall not be allowed to alter the court during the match without getting approval from the opponent and tournament officers.

Distractions

Before starting the game, players should keep their drinks and other personal belongings behind the cornhole board or in a different secure location. 

Rule 5 – Game Play

Singles

Bean bag toss game or Cornhole game can play as singles or doubles. In singles, one player should play against another player.

Doubles

In the double game, there are two partners on each team. One player pitched a bean bag from one board, and another player threw a bean bag ball from another board.

Apart from this, all the other bean bag toss game rules are the same for the single and double play.

Rounds or Innings

Every bean bag toss match has several innings. Each player or team must toss the four bean bags into the hole every inning.

The round or inning never ends until all four bean bags pitch.

Points and Scores

• 3 point– If a bean bag toss into the hole, that pitch has 3 points. The player should aim and toss the bean bag into the hole.

Or else the bean bag may get into the hole due to another player’s pitch.

• 1 Point – If the bean bag does not get into the hole and land on any board portion, that player will get 1 point (On the board).

However, if the bag is on the board and touches the ground, that does not count. Also, it is called foul. Suppose a bean bag touches the ground before coming into the board; that toss does not earn any point.

•  Zero-point – If the bean bag hits anywhere except the hole and the board, it will not score any point. So, all these shots are fouls.

Who Should Deliver The Bean Bags First?

Double Play

The first side of players alternate tossing bean bags until they have thrown all four bean bags. Then remaining, continue to toss bean bags in the same manner.

Single Play

Each player should alternate their pitching until four bags have been tossed. So, it is the end of the inning.

The contestant should pass the bean bag within 20 seconds when entering the pitcher’s box.  

The team or player who scores highest in the previous inning got a chance to toss a bean bag in the next inning first.

Rule 6: Game Over

If any player or team scores exactly 21 points, they win the match.

Besides that, if one team scores seven or more points at the end of the inning and their opponent cannot score any point, that team wins the match. This situation is called “Skunks.”

Rule 7: Scoring

Calculate the total scores of each team. Then subtracted the highest scores from the lowest scores. Now you will receive the answer. This value will be offered to the team that scores the highest points. The lowest point scored group will get zero marks for this round.

Continue this process until one team earn precisely 21 points. The team firstly score 21 points, winning the match!
